Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between wood and composite decking, and what composite grades do you offer?
Wood decking offers a natural look but requires more maintenance over time. Composite decking, on the other hand, is low-maintenance, durable, and comes in three grades:
Premium: MoistureShield & NewTechWood for the ultimate luxury.
Mid-Grade: Ideal for balancing quality and cost.
Entry Level: Veranda—budget-friendly without compromising on style.
Why do you recommend cable railing?
Cable railings provide a modern and sleek aesthetic while ensuring safety and durability. They also allow for unobstructed views, making them a popular choice for outdoor spaces.
Do I need permits for my project?
Most outdoor projects require permits. At Higher Ground, we handle the permitting process for you, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, we provide flexible financing options to help bring your outdoor living dreams to life. Contact us to learn more about available plans.
What are the differences between your decking and railing options?

My wife and I had a vision for what we wanted for our home. After meeting with virtually every custom and major brand company in Charlotte, we decided to go with Mat, and Higher Ground. I can honestly say, it is one of the best decisions we've made. Over the years we have done several major renovations to our forever-home. We have always been very selective about who we've chosen to work with, and as a result, we've been fortunate to have had overwhelmingly good experiences. That's said, I do not know that we've ever worked with any company, big or small, that was as professional, responsive, caring and communicative as Higher Ground. To be clear, this is a family-owned company that not only takes a great deal of pride in how they operate, and what they produce, but they treat you as part of their family, and they treat your project as if it were their own. Mat and his team not only helped us realize our vision, but they improved it. Since these photos were taken, Higher Ground has stained our deck, and we have already started working with them on our next outdoor project. I don't know what it is that you're looking for, but I am sure that whatever it is, Higher Ground can help you find it. Mat is a craftsman, an artist, and a perfectionist; and Higher Ground, and his team, move accordingly.

Higher Ground made short work of demolishing our old, rotting wooden deck and went to work on the foundations for our new, composite one. We now have a beautiful, more convenient deck space with less stairs and more room for guests that will last us for years to come!

The communication was amazing. Chiara kept us constantly updated and made sure we understood every stage of the process. We always felt heard, and every question we had was answered promptly and kindly — this kind of service is hard to find. Even when there were some weather delays, the team managed to complete the project on time. You can tell Matt really knows his craft, and Michelle is incredibly kind and attentive. We couldn’t be happier with the result!

Ok good humans, I’m a design consultant. I interviewed 3 waterproofing contractors. All of which told me the same thing structurally and none of which could give me what I wanted aesthetically.I needed someone who could think outside the box and that is where Matt and Team Higher Ground came in. I didn’t want to loose height and I wanted my space to transition seamlessly from the existing build which is 8 years older.Higher Ground gave me exactly what I wanted without compromising a thing. After a huge rainy week I noticed a small area leaking and without question Higher Ground came back out and remedied the problem in a timely manner.

We had a great experience with Matt, Michelle and team. They were very professional with a crew that showed up on time, did quality work, cleaned up daily and produced a great product, which was a huge outdoor composite deck
